At our recent Human Rights Day event, PEN Perth Member Frances An read a touching letter to journalist Đoan Trang Phạm. Trang is an award-winning human rights activist currently detained in Hanoi. If charged, she faces twenty years in prison.

Xin chào chị Trang. Hello Trang.
Em tên là Phụng, một người Úc gốc Việt. My name is Phung. I am an Australian-born Vietnamese.
Thật sự em, chưa bao giờ thăm qua Việt Nam tại vì ba mẹ của em không có gia đình ở đò nữa. Nếu tiếng Việt của em hơi sai, em xin lỗi. In reality, I have never visited Vietnam because my parents no longer have family there. If my Vietnamese is somewhat wrong, I am sorry.
Lần đầu tiên em nghe tên chị Trang là lúc em trở thành hội viên của PEN Perth, một nhóm hoạt động tại thành phố Perth, tiểu bang Tây Úc. PEN Perth quan tâm đến tự do cho người viết văn và nhà báo ở Á Châu và cả vùng Oceania. The first time I heard your name was when I became a member of PEN Perth, an activist organisation in the city Perth, Western Australia. PEN Perth is interested in freedom for writers and journalists in Asia and the whole Oceania region.
Nhưng trước đó, em cũng rất ngưỡng mộ những người bỏ chạy chính phủ cộng sản để kể chuyện thật trong xã hội đó. But before that, I also greatly admired people who fled Communist governments to tell the truth in those societies.
Tên của hai người em ngưỡng mộ nhất là ông Victor Kravchenko và ông Czeslaw Milosz. Hai người này như chị Trang: bỏ hết tắt cả, không được có cuộc sống yên tĩnh vì đổ cả tâm hồn vào chính trị tự do và phẩm giá con người. The names of two people I admire the most are Victor Kravchenko and Czeslaw Milosz. Both these people are like Trang: gave up everything, could not have a peaceful life because they poured their whole soul into political freedom and human dignity.
Em mong sẽ có một ngày em có thể thăm qua nước Việt Nam. Nhưng thời này, em sợ quá và không giám: em cũng viết khá nhiều bài phê bình chính trị cộng sản. I hope there will be a day I can visit Vietnam. But during this period, I am too afraid and do not dare: I have also written quite a number of critiques against Communist politics.
Có lúc em rất muốn có nước trở về lại, nhưng sợ có thể bị bắt. There are moments when I really want a country to return home to, but am afraid of being captured.
Xin cám ơn chị Trang vẫn tiếp tục hoạt động, và cố gắng bảo vệ tự do cho con người. Thank you Trang for continuing your activities and defending freedom for people.
