An invitation from PEN Perth

Poems of war and peace have long given voice to humanity’s deepest fears, hopes and resilience. Poetry remains one of our most enduring responses to conflict, injustice and the search for peace.
Poetry has always been one of humanity’s most enduring responses to war, injustice and hope. It records the experiences of ordinary people, gives voice to those who have been silenced, and reminds us that behind every headline is a human story. From the trenches of the First World War to the voices emerging from today’s conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine, Myanmar and Gaza, poets continue to bear witness when others cannot.
Why poetry still matters
For more than a century, PEN has defended writers who face censorship, imprisonment and persecution simply for expressing their ideas. At PEN Perth, we believe literature is more than entertainment; it is an essential part of protecting freedom of expression and promoting understanding between cultures.
Join PEN Perth for Poems of War and Peace
That belief will be at the heart of our upcoming evening, Poems of War and Peace, featuring four remarkable poets whose work explores conflict, memory, identity and resilience. Through poetry, they invite us to reflect on the cost of war, the value of peace and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
Join PEN Perth for our AGM
The evening follows PEN Perth’s Annual General Meeting, where members will reflect on the year’s achievements and look ahead to new opportunities to promote literature, human rights and freedom of expression in Western Australia and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
Whether you are a long-time PEN Perth member, a writer, a poetry lover or simply someone interested in the role literature plays in society, we warmly invite you to join us
